An FBA prep center in China is a warehouse near the factories that receives your goods, counts and inspects them, applies FNSKU and carton labels, bags or wraps each unit and ships the cartons DDP to an Amazon fulfillment center. It does the job of a US or UK prep center at roughly a quarter of the labor cost, and it catches problems before you pay international freight on them. This guide covers what a China prep center does, what it costs in 2026, the workflow and how to choose one.

Key takeaways

  • Prep labor in China runs USD 0.20 to 0.50 per unit for label plus poly bag, versus USD 1 to 2 or more at a US or UK prep center.
  • Defects, short counts and wrong labels are found before freight, when the factory can still fix them at its own cost.
  • A China prep center consolidates several suppliers into one FBA shipment, which cuts freight and simplifies customs.
  • Expect 1 to 3 working days for prep and about 30 days of free storage.
  • It is not worth it for a 50-unit express test or for oversized items that need a US 3PL anyway.

What an FBA prep center in China actually does

Factories are good at making the product and bad at Amazon's packaging rules. A good FBA prep service in China sits between the two and handles the following:

  1. Receive from factories. Cartons arrive by domestic courier or truck.
  2. Count and inspect. Units are counted against the PO and a sample (or 100 percent for small runs) is checked for defects, wrong colors and damaged retail boxes, with photos per batch.
  3. FNSKU labeling. Labels printed from your Seller Central PDF are applied over every other barcode.
  4. Poly bag with suffocation warning. Units without sealed retail packaging go into 1.5 mil or thicker bags with the warning printed on.
  5. Bubble wrap. Glass, ceramic and anything that could fail a drop test is wrapped or boxed.
  6. Bundling and kitting. Sets are assembled, labeled "Sold as set, do not separate" and given one FNSKU.
  7. Carton packing and labeling. Units are repacked into FBA-compliant cartons, weighed, measured and given the shipment ID box label.
  8. Consolidation. Multiple suppliers become one shipment and one customs entry.
  9. Storage. Cartons wait until you have an FBA shipment slot, which matters now that Amazon limits inbound quantities.
  10. Ship DDP to FBA. The center's forwarder books freight, clears customs, pays duties and delivers with an appointment.

Our warehousing and FBA prep service follows this sequence, with quality inspection built in before anything is labeled.

Why prep in China instead of a US or UK prep center

The first reason is labor. A US prep center charges around USD 1 to 2 per unit for FNSKU label plus poly bag. The same work at an Amazon FBA prep China warehouse costs USD 0.20 to 0.50. On a 2,000-unit order that is USD 1,500 to 3,000 saved before freight.

The second reason is timing. If 8 percent of your units arrive with scratched lids, a US prep center tells you after the goods have crossed the ocean. A China prep center tells you while the factory is two hours away and you still hold the balance payment. Rework is fast and usually free.

The third reason is consolidation. Three suppliers in Dongguan, Yiwu and Ningbo can be merged into one container or air pallet, which lowers the per-kg rate and means one customs entry instead of three. The full process is in our guide to shipping from China to Amazon FBA.

The alternative is factory direct to FBA. It is cheapest on paper and the most likely to end in Amazon's problem queue, because nobody independent checked labels, counts or carton weights. We recommend it only for reorders of a SKU that has already checked in cleanly.

Amazon packaging requirements checklist

These are the rules a China prep center checks against. Confirm the current version in Seller Central before each new product.

  • One scannable FNSKU label per sellable unit, covering every other barcode (UPC, EAN, factory codes).
  • Suffocation warning on any poly bag with an opening of 5 inches (12.7 cm) or more, in a font size proportional to the bag.
  • Sets and multi-packs labeled "Sold as set, do not separate", with one FNSKU for the whole set.
  • Expiration dates in MM-DD-YYYY or MM-YYYY format on the unit and the carton, 36 point or larger.
  • Cartons no heavier than 22.5 kg (50 lb) and no longer than 63.5 cm (25 inches) on any side; "Team Lift" label above 15 kg.
  • No more than 150 units per carton as a guideline.
  • One FNSKU per carton unless your shipment plan explicitly allows mixed-SKU cartons and every unit is labeled.
  • FBA box label on a flat face, not over a seam.

How to choose an FBA prep center in China

Many "prep centers" are a forwarder's spare room with a label printer. Ask these before sending your first carton:

  • Do you send photos of every batch: arrival, before and after prep, labeled cartons before pickup?
  • Is an inspection report included, and to what standard? A count is not an AQL inspection.
  • Who is the importer of record on DDP shipments?
  • Is cargo insured in the warehouse and in transit, and for how much?
  • Which marketplaces do you ship to monthly: US, UK, EU, Japan?
  • What is the turnaround for 1,000 units, including Q4 and pre-Chinese New Year?
  • What are the storage terms: free period and rate per CBM?

Common FBA rejection reasons and how a China prep center prevents them

A handful of errors cause most problem shipments we see from factory-direct deliveries:

  • Unscannable or wrong FNSKU. Low-resolution print, applied over a curve, or the blue variant labeled as red. Fix: scan-test every label and match variants against photos.
  • Visible second barcode. The factory UPC is left uncovered. Fix: cover-check at the prep bench.
  • Missing suffocation warning. Fix: rebag in compliant bags.
  • Overweight cartons. Factories default to 25 to 30 kg export cartons. Fix: repack to FBA limits and weigh each one.
  • Carton count mismatch. The plan says 40 cartons, 38 arrive. Fix: build the plan from the prep center's final count, not the factory packing list.
  • Damaged retail packaging. Crushed boxes from the domestic leg. Fix: replace boxes before export.

Each is cheap to fix in Shenzhen and expensive in a fulfillment center, where Amazon charges unplanned prep fees or marks inventory unfulfillable.

When not to use a China prep center

Two situations do not justify the extra stop. First, very low volume: for a 30 to 100 unit express test, the receiving fee and extra 2 to 4 days outweigh the savings, so have the factory label the units and photograph each carton. Second, oversized or heavy items such as furniture or exercise equipment, which usually go to a US 3PL for storage and multi-channel fulfillment anyway, so prepping in China moves work rather than removing it.

For everything in between, which is most private label products from 50 g to 5 kg, an FBA prep center in China is the lowest-cost place to make inventory Amazon-ready. Our guide to private label products from China covers the sourcing steps before prep, and our services page shows how we tie sourcing, inspection, prep and DDP freight together.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an FBA prep center in China cost per unit?

For a simple product, a full prep run (receiving, count, FNSKU label and poly bag) typically costs USD 0.30 to 0.70 per unit in 2026. Bubble wrap, kitting or inserts add USD 0.20 to 0.80. Storage is usually free for 30 days, then USD 15 to 30 per CBM per month. DDP freight to Amazon is quoted separately per kg or CBM.

Can I skip the prep center and ship factory direct to Amazon FBA?

You can, and for reorders from a factory that has already shipped the same SKU without issues it works. For a first order it is risky: nobody independent counts the goods, checks labels or catches defects before they cross the ocean. A rejected shipment at an Amazon fulfillment center costs far more than USD 0.50 per unit of prep.

How long does FBA prep in China take?

Once goods arrive at the warehouse, standard prep takes 1 to 3 working days for a few hundred to a few thousand units. Add 1 to 2 days if an inspection report is included, and longer in the weeks before Chinese New Year or during Q4 peak when warehouses are full. Confirm turnaround in writing before you book.

Does a China prep center handle UK and EU Amazon marketplaces?

Most established FBA prep services in China support the US, Canada, UK, EU and Japan. The prep steps are the same; the difference is the freight leg and the importer of record. For the UK and EU you need a VAT and EORI number, or a forwarder willing to act as importer under DDP terms. Ask which marketplaces the center ships to every month, not just in theory.

Who is the importer of record when a prep center ships DDP to FBA?

Amazon will never act as importer of record. Under DDP the forwarder arranged by the prep center clears customs and pays duties, often using its own or a partner's import entity. You should still know whose name is on the entry, confirm duties are paid at the correct HS code and keep the paperwork, because the seller remains responsible for compliance.
