DDP shipping from China means you pay one price and the goods show up at your door with duty and tax already settled. For most Amazon and e-commerce sellers moving a few pallets at a time, it is the simplest way to import. It is also where we see the most misunderstanding, because a cheap DDP quote often hides how the customs side is actually being handled.
This guide covers what Delivered Duty Paid actually includes, how forwarders price it, realistic 2026 transit times, the risks that are not written on the quote, and when you should use FOB instead.
Key takeaways
- DDP covers pickup, export clearance, freight, import clearance, duty, tax and last-mile delivery in one price.
- Sea DDP to a US or EU door typically takes 30 to 35 days, air 7 to 12 days, express 5 to 8 days.
- A DDP quote well below your product's real duty rate usually means under-declaration, and the importer carries that risk.
- DDP suits shipments under roughly 15 CBM or 2,000 kg; above that, FOB with your own broker is usually cheaper and more transparent.
What DDP means compared with DAP, EXW, FOB and CIF
Incoterms define where the seller's responsibility ends and yours begins. DDP is the only term where the seller carries risk, cost and customs duty all the way to your named address. Every other term hands something back to you.
| Incoterm | Seller handles | Buyer handles | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXW (Ex Works) | Goods ready at factory | Everything from factory pickup onward, including Chinese export clearance | Buyers with their own China forwarder |
| FOB (Free on Board) | Inland haulage, export clearance, loading on vessel at Chinese port | Ocean or air freight, insurance, import clearance, duty, delivery | Most container-level trade |
| CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) | Everything in FOB plus freight and insurance to destination port | Import clearance, duty, port fees, delivery | Less common now; port charges often inflated |
| DAP / DDU (Delivered at Place) | Everything to your address except import duty and tax | Import duty, VAT or sales tax, sometimes the clearance fee | Buyers who want door delivery but their own duty payment |
| DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) | Everything, including duty and tax, to your address | Unloading only | Small and mid-size e-commerce shipments |
DDU is the old name for DAP and still appears on Chinese forwarder quotes. Both mean duty is not included, so expect a customs invoice before the carrier releases your goods.
What a DDP quote from China should include
A proper delivered duty paid China quote bundles six cost blocks. Ask for them to be listed, even if the forwarder only gives you one all-in number. Anything missing from the list will reappear as a surcharge later.
- Factory pickup and consolidation. Trucking from the supplier in Dongguan, Yiwu or wherever the factory is to the forwarder's warehouse, plus any repacking or palletizing.
- Chinese export clearance. The export declaration and, for some categories, the commodity inspection. Factories without export rights use the forwarder's license here.
- International freight. Sea LCL or FCL, air cargo or express, including fuel and security surcharges and the origin and destination handling fees.
- Import customs clearance. Broker fees, bond, entry filing and any inspection charges at the destination.
- Import duty and tax. The tariff on your HS code plus VAT in the EU and UK, GST in Australia, or the applicable US duty including any additional tariffs in force.
- Last-mile delivery. Trucking from the destination warehouse to your address, an Amazon fulfillment center or a 3PL, including any appointment or liftgate fees.
Cargo insurance and unloading at your premises are almost never included. Ask for both separately.
DDP shipping from China: cost basis and transit times
Forwarders price DDP by chargeable weight for air and express, and by cubic meter or per kg for sea, whichever is higher. Rates swing with season, fuel and tariff changes, so treat these as 2026 planning figures, not quotes.
| Mode | Typical price basis | Door-to-door transit (China to US / EU) | Sweet spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea LCL DDP | USD 180 to 450 per CBM, or USD 1.5 to 4 per kg | 30 to 35 days | 1 to 15 CBM, non-urgent |
| Sea FCL DDP | Per container plus duty at actual rate | 30 to 40 days | Above 15 CBM |
| Air DDP | USD 5 to 9 per kg | 7 to 12 days | 100 to 1,000 kg, higher value goods |
| Express DDP (DHL, UPS, FedEx via forwarder) | USD 6 to 12 per kg | 5 to 8 days | Under 100 kg, samples, restocks |
Minimums matter. Sea DDP usually has a 1 CBM or 200 kg minimum, and some lanes charge a flat USD 150 to 250 for anything smaller. Air DDP rates drop at the 100 kg, 300 kg and 500 kg breaks. If you are choosing between modes, our sea versus air freight comparison walks through the break-even math.
Pros and cons of DDP shipping from China
Why importers choose it
One price, one invoice, one point of contact. You do not need a customs bond, a broker or an EORI number before your first order. For a seller testing a product with a USD 5,000 order, that convenience is worth a lot, and the forwarder also handles FBA appointment booking and labeling.
Where it goes wrong
Grey-channel "double clearance" quotes. Many Chinese forwarders advertise "double clearance tax included" (shuang qing bao shui). The clean version means they clear export and import and pay the real duty. The common version means they under-declare value, misclassify the HS code or split shipments to stay under thresholds. The goods usually arrive. But if customs audits the entry, the importer of record owes the difference plus penalties, and seized goods are rarely recovered.
Importer of record. Under DDP you often never appear on the customs entry. That can be fine, but it also means you have no import record for your own compliance file, you cannot reclaim VAT in the EU or UK, and Amazon may ask for documents you do not have.
US tariffs and de minimis. Additional tariffs on Chinese-origin goods changed several times between 2018 and 2026, and the Section 321 de minimis exemption that once allowed sub-USD-800 parcels in duty free has been restricted for China-origin goods. Quotes built on old assumptions are wrong. Check the current rules for your HS code before relying on any DDP number.
EU VAT handling. In the EU, import VAT is typically 19 to 25 percent. A forwarder paying it under their own entity means you cannot deduct it. For VAT-registered sellers, DAP with your own VAT number or postponed accounting is usually cheaper overall.
When DDP makes sense, and when FOB is the better call
DDP is the right choice when the shipment is small or medium, the destination is an Amazon warehouse or 3PL, and you do not yet have a broker. In our experience that covers most orders under about 15 CBM or USD 30,000 in value. The premium you pay over FOB is usually 10 to 20 percent of the freight cost, which buys you predictability.
FOB wins once you ship full containers, import regularly or sell in a category with high or variable duty. You pay the factory for goods loaded at the Chinese port, book your own forwarder, and your own licensed broker clears the goods in your name. You see the real duty, you hold the import record, and you can reclaim VAT. If you are also comparing the cost of managing all this yourself versus using an agent, our breakdown of sourcing agent fees shows how freight coordination is usually priced.
Whichever term you pick, avoid CIF from China. Destination charges on CIF shipments are a known trap.
Questions to ask any forwarder before booking DDP
We send some version of this list to every new forwarder we test. Vague answers to questions 2, 3 and 4 are a reason to walk away.
- Is duty calculated at the actual rate for my HS code, and can you show me the code you will declare?
- Who will be the importer of record and the consignee on the customs entry?
- Will the declared value match my commercial invoice? If not, why not?
- Do you provide the entry summary or customs documentation after clearance?
- What is the chargeable weight ratio for air (usually 1:6000) and the CBM-to-kg ratio for sea?
- Which fees are excluded: insurance, liftgate, residential delivery, FBA appointment, storage after free days?
- What happens if customs holds or inspects the shipment? Who pays the exam fee and storage?
- Can you ship with my product's certifications (FCC, CE, UKCA, FDA registration) on file, or do you need them from me?
- What is the cutoff date for this week's consolidation and the realistic door date?
- Do you have a tracking system or do I get updates by chat only?

Final word on DDP from China
DDP shipping from China is a tool, not a shortcut around customs. With a forwarder who declares the real value and tells you who the importer is, it removes most of the friction from importing small volumes. With the cheapest double-clearance quote on the market, it moves a liability you cannot see onto your business. Ask the questions above and move to FOB once your volume justifies your own broker.
Frequently asked questions
What does DDP mean in shipping from China?
DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid. The seller or forwarder handles everything to your door: pickup at the factory, Chinese export clearance, international freight, import customs clearance, import duty and tax in your country, and final delivery. You pay one agreed price and should receive no separate customs bill.
How much does DDP shipping from China cost?
Typical 2026 ranges: sea DDP to the US or EU runs roughly USD 1.5 to 4 per kg or USD 180 to 450 per CBM depending on the duty rate of your product and the destination. Air DDP usually lands between USD 5 and 9 per kg, and express DDP between USD 6 and 12 per kg. Always ask whether duty is charged at the real rate for your HS code.
Who is the importer of record under DDP?
In many DDP arrangements the forwarder's own entity or a nominee clears the goods, not you. That is convenient, but it means you may not be the legal importer, which matters for product compliance, insurance claims, Amazon FBA requirements and tax reclaim. Ask the forwarder in writing who appears as importer and consignee on the customs entry.
Is DDP shipping from China legal?
DDP itself is a standard Incoterms 2020 rule and completely legal. The problem is how some forwarders execute it. If a quote is far below the duty rate you would pay yourself, the goods are probably being under-declared or misclassified at import. The shipment may still arrive, but the liability for the under-paid duty sits with the importer, not the forwarder.
Can I use DDP for Amazon FBA shipments?
Yes, and it is the most common way small and mid-size FBA sellers ship. The forwarder clears the goods and delivers to the fulfillment center. Amazon will not act as importer of record, so your forwarder must provide a US or EU entity for clearance. Confirm they can handle FBA appointment booking and pallet labeling before you book.
