A China dropshipping agent replaces AliExpress as your supplier: they buy from the factory at wholesale, hold your stock in a China warehouse, pack every order with your branding and ship it on a tracked line in 7 to 15 days. For a store doing more than about ten orders a day, that means lower unit cost, faster delivery and fewer refunds.

Our team has run dropshipping fulfillment from Shenzhen and Yiwu for Shopify and TikTok Shop sellers since 2016. This guide covers what an agent does, how it works, what it costs, the shipping lines, how to evaluate an agent and how to switch from AliExpress without a stockout.

Key takeaways

  • An agent sources at factory price, holds stock, brands your packaging and syncs tracking; AliExpress does none of that reliably.
  • Typical costs: product at wholesale, USD 0.5 to 2 per order handling, USD 3 to 8 shipping per small parcel to the US or EU, storage often free for 30 to 90 days.
  • Standard lines deliver in 7 to 15 days to the US and Europe; express is 4 to 8 days at a much higher price.
  • Test every agent with a sample order to your own address before moving volume.
  • Switch gradually: keep AliExpress live until the agent's first stock batch is in the warehouse and a test order has arrived.

Dropshipping agent versus AliExpress

AliExpress is a marketplace of resellers. Each listing is a separate seller with their own stock, packaging and shipping habits, and the price includes their margin. It is the right tool for testing a product and the wrong tool for running a store at volume.

A private agent dropshipping setup works differently. The agent finds the manufacturer or a 1688 wholesaler, buys a small batch at factory price, stores it and ships each order under your brand.

Who needs a dropshipping agent in China

Not every store should switch. In our experience a China dropshipping agent pays off once two or three of these apply.

  • You ship ten or more orders a day on one product, so the lower unit cost outweighs the stock purchase.
  • You want branded packaging, inserts or a bundle no AliExpress seller will assemble.
  • Customers complain about delivery times and you refund orders that later arrive.
  • Your best seller went out of stock on AliExpress mid-campaign.
  • You plan to move toward a private label. Our guide to private label products from China covers that next step.

How working with a China dropshipping agent works

  1. Product sourcing and quote. You send the product link. The agent finds the factory or 1688 source, checks variants, and quotes product cost, handling fee and shipping per destination.
  2. Sample and approval. The agent sends a sample or inspects it in the warehouse with photos and video. Approve quality, packaging and branding before the stock order.
  3. Small stock batch. You pay for an initial batch, typically one to three weeks of expected sales, often 50 to 300 units. The agent receives, checks and books it in.
  4. Store integration or order sheet. Most agents connect to Shopify, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop through an app or API; smaller agents work from a daily order sheet.
  5. Daily fulfillment. Orders before the cut-off are picked, packed with your branding and dispatched the same or next day.
  6. Tracking sync. Tracking numbers are pushed back to your store and the customer is notified.
  7. Returns and reships. Lost or damaged parcels are reshipped from stock. Customer returns go to a local address or are refunded without return; sending a USD 8 item back to China is not worth it.

What a dropshipping agent costs

Most private agents charge no setup or monthly fee; revenue comes from product margin and a per-order fee. Typical 2026 figures for a parcel under 500 grams:

Cost itemTypical rangeNotes
Product costFactory or 1688 price plus 5 to 15 percent agent marginStill usually below the AliExpress price
Handling fee per orderUSD 0.5 to 2Covers picking, packing, label; higher for multi-item orders
Shipping: US standard lineUSD 3 to 8, 8 to 15 daysPrice rises with weight bands
Shipping: UK and Western Europe standard lineUSD 3.5 to 9, 7 to 15 daysDuties and VAT usually prepaid on line price
Shipping: Australia and CanadaUSD 5 to 12, 10 to 20 daysFewer line options
Shipping: express (DHL, FedEx, UPS)USD 15 to 30, 4 to 8 daysFor high-value or urgent orders
StorageFree for 30 to 90 days, then USD 0.3 to 1 per cubic foot monthlyVaries by agent
Branding extrasCustom box USD 0.3 to 1.5, insert card USD 0.05 to 0.2, sticker USD 0.02 to 0.1Printed in batches of 500 to 1,000
Quality check per orderUSD 0.2 to 0.5Optional, worth it for electronics and apparel

Ask for every quote split into product, handling and shipping. An "all-in" number hides where the margin sits and makes offers impossible to compare.

Dropshipping shipping lines explained

The "line" is the delivery service your parcel travels on, and it is what separates a good agent from a bad one. There are three tiers.

Special lines (YunExpress-type)

Private consolidators collect parcels in Shenzhen or Yiwu, fly them in bulk, clear customs in the destination country and hand them to the local post or a courier for the last mile. Brands include YunExpress, 4PX, Yanwen and CNE. Typical transit is 7 to 15 days to the US and Western Europe with end-to-end tracking. Most agent volume moves on these lines, and the agent's choice of consolidator and service level matters more than the brand.

Postal services (ePacket successors)

China Post lines were the old default. Today they take 12 to 25 days and tracking often stops at the border. Use them only for very low value items.

Express

DHL, FedEx and UPS deliver in 4 to 8 days at the highest cost. They make sense for orders above about USD 60, reships of lost parcels and customers who paid for expedited shipping. For the US side, see our guide to shipping from China to the USA, and for moving bulk stock to a destination warehouse, consolidated shipping from China.

How to evaluate a dropshipping agent

  • Response time. Send a specific product question at 10 a.m. China time. A real operation answers within hours, with a price breakdown.
  • Warehouse proof. Ask for a live video walk-through showing racks, packing stations and outbound parcels.
  • Test order. Order your product to your own address. Check packaging, dispatch time, tracking updates and actual delivery days against the promise.
  • Tracking quality. Numbers should update within 24 to 48 hours and show events through to delivery. A week at "label created" is a line problem.
  • Refund and reship policy. Get it in writing. A 30 to 45 day lost-parcel window with free reship is standard.
  • Stock reporting. You should see your inventory level at any time, via a dashboard or a daily sheet.

If you would rather have a team that already runs this process for Shopify and TikTok Shop sellers, send us your product list on WhatsApp for a per-order quote. The full scope is on our dropshipping service page.

Red flags with China dropshipping agents

  • Quotes with no breakdown, or prices below 1688 wholesale.
  • A subscription or large minimum stock purchase demanded before any test order.
  • No warehouse video, or a "warehouse" that is clearly another company's.
  • Tracking numbers that are reused, invalid or stop updating at origin.
  • No written policy on lost parcels and reships.

How to switch from AliExpress without stockouts

  1. Pick your top one to three SKUs by volume, not the whole catalog.
  2. Get a quote and sample, and run a test order while AliExpress fulfillment continues.
  3. Order a first batch sized to two to three weeks of sales. Keep fulfilling through AliExpress until the agent confirms the stock is received and checked.
  4. Switch that SKU on a Monday, watch dispatch and tracking for a week, then move the next.
  5. Set a reorder point, usually seven to ten days of sales.
  6. After a month of clean fulfillment, move the long tail.

TikTok Shop and Shopify specifics

Shopify. Most agents connect through a fulfillment app or their own API, so orders and tracking flow both ways. Check the variant mapping before go-live; a wrong map is the most common cause of mis-shipped orders in the first week.

TikTok Shop. The platform enforces dispatch deadlines, delivery windows and tracking validity, and penalizes late orders through the shop health score. Confirm the agent ships within 24 hours on lines TikTok recognizes. Many sellers keep fast movers in a local warehouse and use the China dropshipping agent for product tests and the long tail.

Done right, moving from AliExpress to a dropshipping agent in China turns a product test into a business: lower costs, delivery customers can trust, and packaging that is yours.

Frequently asked questions

What does a China dropshipping agent do?

A dropshipping agent sources your products directly from factories or 1688 at wholesale prices, holds a small stock batch in their China warehouse, packs each order (with your branding if you want it), ships it on a tracked line and syncs tracking numbers back to your store. You get lower product costs, faster and more consistent delivery, and one point of contact instead of dozens of AliExpress sellers.

How much does a dropshipping agent charge?

Most private agents charge no monthly fee. You pay the product cost, a per-order handling fee of roughly USD 0.5 to 2, and the shipping cost for the line you choose, which is typically USD 3 to 8 for a small parcel to the US or Europe in 2026. Branded packaging, inserts and quality checks are priced as extras. Storage is often free for 30 to 90 days.

Is a dropshipping agent better than AliExpress?

For stores doing more than roughly ten orders a day, yes. AliExpress is fine for testing products with no commitment. An agent is better once you need reliable 7 to 15 day delivery, lower unit costs, branded packaging, stock that does not run out mid-campaign, and someone who answers when a parcel goes missing. The trade-off is a small upfront stock purchase.

How long does dropshipping from China take with an agent?

Standard tracked lines take about 7 to 15 days to the US, UK and most of Western Europe in 2026, and 10 to 20 days to Australia, Canada and the Middle East. Express services via DHL or FedEx take 4 to 8 days at three to five times the cost. Agents dispatch within 24 to 48 hours of the order, which is the main reason they beat AliExpress on total delivery time.

Can a dropshipping agent fulfill TikTok Shop orders?

Yes, but TikTok Shop enforces strict dispatch and delivery windows, and late shipments hurt your shop health score. Make sure the agent ships within 24 hours, uses lines whose tracking is recognized by TikTok, and can meet the delivery deadline for your region. For US TikTok Shop, many sellers move fast-selling SKUs to a US warehouse and keep the China agent for long-tail products.
